Calling a DCE (Director of Christian Education)

As mentioned in other places...we have asked Matthew C Harwell to designate...and, he has done so! We are looking forward to Matthew joining us at Good Shepherd, and taking on the challenges of ministry and mission in Glencoe!

Please visit the Blog for ongoing updates as to Matthew's arrival, installation, living arrangements, etc...

Youth & Education

 Christian Education

Education is an ongoing process in the world of Christianity, just as it is in the "secular" realm. To that end, we offer Sunday School for the very young and we bring a message to the older folks at Millie Beneke. In-between, there are Bible Study, Confirmation, and Small Group Study opportunities for every age level and every faith level.

Christian education has always been important at Good Shepherd. Our young people receive instruction from the pages of Holy Scripture in Sunday School, Kids’ Praise (after school programming), and Confirmation. Adults continue to build on their foundation by studying the Bible on Sunday mornings, Tuesday mornings, and Wednesday evenings (sometimes alongside their children/youth, sometimes as adult groups).

Good Shepherd is small in size, but great in caring for one another. This caring translates into more intimate worship & Small Groups for education & study of Holy Scripture.

  • Sunday School studies Bible Stories and acquaints children/youth with the truth of God's interaction with people throughout history. Grades N-8 are eligible for these lessons.
  • Kids Praise is our Wednesday after-school program. Grades 1-4 come over after school and enjoy a snack and a lesson (led by Pastor James with Kelly Hayes [Fall '09- Spring '10] assisting). Singing, playing, and crafts are all a part of this program.
  • Sunday morning Adult Bible Class runs during the school year (September - May) following worship, and builds on important topics of today's world, addressed in God's Word. The topic for 2009-2010 has been the development of the Hebrew people into God's chosen - receiving the 10 Commandments (and the rest of the LAW) on Mt. Sinai.
  • Tuesday Morning Bible Study meets at 9:30am during the school year. The ongoing topic for this class has been to study the previous weekends' Scripture readings.
  • Millie Beneke Manor hosts a Tuesday afternoon (2:00pm) study.
  • Confirmation instruction is available for all 5-8 graders. Julie Stiles leads the 5-6 graders in studying topical issues such as evolution, Bible History, and Worship. Pastor James leads the 7-8 graders in learning from Luther’s Small Catechism – a helpful tool for studying the Bible in-depth.
  • Community Women’s Bible Study involves women of all ages. They meet in a Fall and/or a Winter session in a Thursday-night or Friday-morning format.
  • Men’s Bible Study has met on Thursday evenings and Thursday mornings.
