"Seeking and Serving the Lost and Hurting"

BLOG Post New Entry

Week #1

Greetz! What we have here is an opportunity to connect with others about what we're reading.

I've heard some murmuring about "Lot's ridiculous requests", "Men who meet Alimelech and claim their wives are their sisters", and "How old is too old?" Yeah, I thought these would make good Jeopardy categories!

But, they're the things that come up in early Genesis readings.

Let the ramblings begin! Ask, make notes...let's pow-wow. Or, you can just read whatever everybody else writes...either way, stay tuned. The Word of God is an interesting thing to read.

Am I the only one losing sleep? Power through, persist, and trudge forth.... AHGH! The pace is helpful in that it is giving a good overall picture. There are many things that I just didn't know. Huge pieces of the puzzle are being repositioned in my brain and the picture is becoming clearer but there are a lot of things that I don't like and that don't make sense to me as being God's will. But I will not monopolize this space so here is my one question of the day....
There is a lot of detailed description of the Arc of the Covenant, which implies that how it is constructed and what it is to look like is very important. There are VERY specific instructions. Am I missing a very obvious metaphor? yes? no?

Dear Friend, just something to ponder...because I like to "make connections", too...is the Ark an archetypal construction (foreshadowing something yet to come) or is it to represent the world already made or a relationship? OR, is the detail in the detail? It's interesting that what God instructed...was followed to the letter, and Exodus goes to great pains to make sure the readers know this...

so little time... just getting it out before I move on.... in Exodus the Lord is hardening pharoh's heart. Even when people act poorly it can be God's will? Greater good, I suppose. Sacrifice one for many? Also struck by the ungrateful Isrealites. Is this the kind of faith I have? "Show me!" faith? "Let me complain about all you've given me" faith? "I'm kinda sick of manna" faith? I like that Joshua can only win when Moses is holding the staff over his head. It gets hard and moses ACCEPTS Help and uses what he's got (a rock) to make it through. My arms hurt just reading, it but I am glad that it's ok to not go it alone. Moses also takes advice from Jethro. Since I am fairly poor at accepting help and taking advice- these things were good for me to read.

Oh!... Do you know him? 'cause I have this rash! Can he also intercede on my behalf for my sinful "emissions"? I probably don't really want to know what "purification" after childbirth/ any other issue addressed in Lev. are, right? But on the upside- bestiality and incest are now frowned upon. I guess after this post I'm gonna need a guilty offering and an atonement offering... I may have actually L.O.L.ed while reading the bible today.

ops- guilt offering. Now seriously- It's really gory. No fat or blood- when does that change? Common themes: All offering are the best of whatever you have. God loves schmucks. We're still guilty even if we don't know we're sinning. There are penalties. Ministers get a share. If you don't follow Gods instructions you're gonna get burned. But why do the priests make the atonements for the people? Are they closer to God? Why arent these rituals stll required?

I like Ex.17. Joshua is only winning when Moses holds the staff above his head. It?s hard work. My arms get tired reading the passage. Moses uses what he?s got (a rock) and accepts help (people steadying his arms). Moses also accepts advice from Jethro. I?m not great at accepting advice or accepting (much less asking) for help. I?m learning. I?m glad to have people to steady my arms during this bible study.

So MANY themes and so little time to process them! My goodness! Yes, I'm looking behind every nook and cranny to see something "bottom line" through it all. I like the "offering the best" part. I think that is true. Still, as somebody else mentioned, God seems to "pick and choose" at times when He is thinking about striking or acting or remembering.
When the Bible says "then God remembered" is that because God remembered, or because that's what it SEEMS like had happened because hadn't previously acted in that situation for their good/wants.

Leviticus, wow. Lots of instructions, very graphic instructions, then accept my correction or consider the consequences. God's pretty clear here. In Numbers they're doing what they're told until they start crabbing about manna. And Moses addresses God directly asking "Why are you doing this to me?" I love the blessing we use as a benediction. In my bible it's called a "Priestly Blessing." Is it only appropriatly used by a minister? How does the whole "blessing" thing work?
