While numerical growth is a wonderful experience in a church, keeping up with it is usually a more difficult task. Programming, relationship-building, teaching, organizing and recruiting are all big jobs...and all are vitally important to facilitating our growth.
To that end, the Board of Education, the Presidents and the Church Council have researched the next steps to take, and have presented the concept of calling a DCE to the congregation. While playing the "God card" is sometimes met with skepticism, it is truly God who is guiding and directing us in this way. We believe that the right person will present himself/herself through the process set before us...and, that the goals we have set will be met.
It is the desire of the Boards of Education/Presidents to keep the congregation informed of every step in this journey together. Over the past week, we have heard from several of the Placement Directors from the Concordia University system. They have passed along the names of candidates that we will be looking at soon (March 31, in fact).
Our church body describes the Call as follows: "The calling and placing of ministers of religion - commissioned in the church involves the whole church. The Holy Spirit guides and directs the process of calling workers in His kingdom through people, on behalf of calling entities, according to their constitutional processes. Each step of the process will always include prayer that God's will be done and that the Holy Spirit guide the process and decisions.
A call comes from God thorugh the calling entity and is extended by God to the called person. Thus, congregations...[and other official organizations within the Synod] work together cooperatively to provide the church with ministers who are qualified and capable of carrying out the mission and ministry that the Lord has entrusted to His church."

After interviewing a few candidates by phone, we have decided to interview 2 of them in person. We'll host one candidate the weekend of May 16 - she'll be here for the worship service, interview, stay overnight at the "Pinske Hotel" and we'll show her the bussling city of Glencoe on Monday morning before she heads out. (This is the plan, subject to change as her schedule allows!)
The second candidate is scheduled to arrive at the end of May, and will attend the Memorial Day service on May 30. He'll probably have to head out that afternoon, so we'll get the visits and interview done the Saturday before.
We look forward to meeting these two in person, and once again I encouage you to be praying for them - as ministers where they currently serve, and as potential ministers at Good Shepherd!

Last week on Wednesday, June 2, we held a Voters' Meeting for the purpose of extending a call to a DCE. The Congregation decided by unanimous vote to extend an offer to Matthew Harwell to accept designation. As an Intern, he may not accept a call until his internship has been completed...so, until then...he "designates." We eagerly await his official response to our request!
Until then, we pray for Matt, his wife Lise, the congregation they currently serve in Indiana...and, for our congregation to prepare for the arrival of a worker in our midst at Good Shepherd.

Now, the excitement can begin! Matthew C Harwell has accepted designation at Good Shepherd! So, that means...he is making plans to join us in Glencoe! He will complete his internship at Mt. Olive in Greenwood, IN (by the end of July) and then we'll see him mid-August some time.
His wife, Lise, has been preparing her resume - hoping to land a teaching position in the Glencoe area (she is certified in K-8 education).
They are also interested in buying a home. That might mean some extra travel this way, and an opportunity for a family to host them for a day or two.
Please pray for Matthew as he completes his internship, and for Mt. Olive, that his ministry there would continue to be received. Please also pray for the Harwells as a couple, as any move is a big deal...and this one is pretty huge.
To God be the glory for leading Matthew to Good Shepherd!

Matthew & Lise Harwell will be moving to Glencoe the first week of August! Not sure when they'll arrive, but they'll need some help in unloading their goods.
They'll move in...and then promptly take off for Seward, NE, for a wedding...before heading to Blue Springs, MO, for Matthew's Commissioning on August 8! Then, they'll return to Glencoe to settle in a bit.
Matthew's installation will be August 15 during the 9:00am service. Afterward, we'll host a Card and Pantry Shower for the Harwells in the Fellowship Hall! Please bring a pantry (food-related) item or a card to welcome them...AND...sit down to enjoy a Sunday Brunch put on by our Call Committee & Friends.
Until the Harwells arrive, we wish them well and continue to pray for them, their travels, and their transition. Peace!

Matt & Lise are here! Installation was this past weekend - August 15. They were received with a lunch reception and card/pantry shower. Some of Matt's family drove up from Missouri, too, and offered a helping hand to the couple as they work at making their house a home. The amusing story from that day is that as Matt was getting into the car to drive over to church, a bird decided to decorate his shirt in its own special way...so, he had to change clothes. Nice...and amusing to whomever did NOT have a bird poop on him/her that day...
